The Quest for the Perfect Shampoo

Hellooo, everyone! I hope you’re all fine and dandy and that September is treating you well. I need your help! Recently, I’ve been struggling to find a decent shampoo and conditioner that’s cruelty free, reasonably priced and doesn’t make my hair look like I’ve bathed in a tub of lard. This has been more troublesome than I imagined! I’ve tried ALL sorts. Have any of you lovely lot got any recommendations for quality cruelty free hair care?

My hair is really fine, poker straight and often flat as a pancake. It takes a lot of faffing about to give it any kind of body so I generally look for volumising shampoos designed for limp or thin hair. It’s also ombré/balayage blonde, so I use a purple shampoo once a week. In terms of conditioner, I’ve been using a purple based one to diminish brassy, yellow undertones. I have to wash it every other day but the problem is, my hair is starting to look greasy after one day – ain’t nobody got time for that!

On holiday, I took Lee Stafford’s CoCo LoCo shampoo and the Bleach Blonde conditioner. It seemed to work well, but being in Vietnam was like being in a permanent sauna so I was washing my hair every day and didn’t get chance to notice how quickly it was getting greasy! This shampoo is designed to give you silky, soft and shiny hair, which just doesn’t work well for my hair at all. It may work if you have thicker hair or hair that’s a little dry or unmanageable, but if your hair is soft and limp like mine, shampoos aimed at heightening that silky feeling just aren’t going to compliment your locks.

I’m a massive fan of Lush and I’ve tried their BIG shampoo, which has sea salt in it and is designed to add volume worthy of a mermaid. I loved the scent of this shampoo, but felt like I needed a lot of product to get my hair clean and, at £23.50 for 600g, it gets pretty costly! I also needed to use a tonne of conditioner because it left my hair SO knotty. I’ve been in to enquire about other shampoos, but I feel like the sales advisors are overly keen on their shampoo bars, which I just hate the idea of. I want my shampoo in a bottle! Guess I’m old fashioned.

Charles Worthington shampoos are reasonably priced and I’ve had some luck with them, but the last one I got from the Volume and Bounce range left my hair looking like I hadn’t washed it since 1999. Now, this could’ve been a bad batch as his Ultra Violet is, in my opinion, the best purple shampoo on the market but I only use that once a week and don’t want to up it to my regular shampoo as it can make my hair too ashy toned.

I’ve also tried all of The Body Shop’s Rainforest shampoo range and they just don’t agree with my hair. They either left it looking too greasy or too dry – I’m basically Goldilocks and the three hairs! I have seen online that they do a Fuji Green Tea shampoo, so that could be worth a try.

I’ve tried lots of Superdrug’s own ranges, all to no avail. There’s a few newbies in their Extracts collection from when I was last shopping there for my shampoo, so again, I could give them another go. I’m desperate to find the product that’s just right. What am I missing?! I’m driving myself absolutely crazy!

Please help me out, folks! If you know of any reasonably priced cruelty free hair-care, please let me know in the comments below. Wishing you all a fabulous Tuesday and top notch hair. Thanks for reading, chums!

Much love,

Jess XO
